AFTER INSTALLATION

After installation of the program and TNC (modem) has been completed, you can start PacTerm for Windows in a few different ways:

  • Double click on the PacTerm for Windows icon View of PacTerm 98 icon

  • Click on the Start button View of Start button.
Select Programs and then click on the PacTerm for Windows Icon.

View of the Registration Information screen

If you downloaded PacTerm for Windows from the web, you wont have an Activation Key or Serial Number. Just enter your Call Sign and press Demo Mode. See the page on Using Demo Mode for important information on PacTerm for Windows Demo Mode. If you have an Activation Key and a Serial Number, enter them and press OK. The program will then ask for the COM port where the TNC has been connected and the baud rate to use to communicate with the TNC.

View of the Settings screen

The program should now come up. If it doesnt, check the suggestions in the Troubleshooting section of the online manual.

Now that you have finished entering the basic information, it’s time to begin the program. On opening PacTerm for Windows for the first time you will see this program window near the top of your monitor.

View of the PacTerm 98 main screen

Near the bottom of the program window you will see a small chat buffer (the default color of this window is white), and a larger receive text buffer at the top (the default color of this window is blue). The bar that separates the two windows is the splitter bar, it can be moved up and down to resize the windows to your preference. NOTE: When making a packet connection, text you receive will appear in the text buffer. Commands and text you enter will appear in the chat buffer. All results of the commands or text entered by you will appear in the Command Window. The Monitor Window monitors the traffic on the packet radio port.

There are two basic Modes for AMTOR operation. Mode A operation is called ARQ. ARQ is a one-to-one Mode, meaning you are allowed to communicate with only one station at a time. Mode B operation is called FEC. This Mode is similar to RTTY.

To make a AMTOR contact :

Select Listen AMTOR Mode from the Mode menu.

Click on the Listen AMTOR button View of the Listen AMTOR button . Tune to the AMTOR signal according to the specifications in your Kantronics TNC Manual.

Then select Link from the AMTOR menu or press the Link AMTOR button View of the Link AMTOR button . Link will bring up a connect box. Enter the SELCAL of the station you want to connect to

CONNECTING TO YOUR OWN MAILBOX

Connecting to the mailbox in your own TNC is the best way to practice connecting to a packet station. The radio does not have to be connected. The following steps will allow you to make your first connection.

Press F7.

Type in your Call Sign plus a dash one (-1). This is the default Call Sign for the TNC's PBBS. Example: If your Call Sign is N4GDO, you need to type N4GDO-1 in the Call Sign to connect to box.

Press the Connect button.

Now you are connected to your mailbox. If your screen doesnt look similar to the following, consult the Troubleshooting section of the online Help.

CONNECTED to N4GDO-1 [09/29/97 12:49:31]
[KAMP-8.2-HM$]
100000 BYTES AVAILABLE
THERE ARE NO MESSAGES
ENTER COMMAND: B,J,K,L,R,S, or Help >***

Now you can enter any of the mailbox commands shown (B,J,K,L,R,S, or Help). Later you will want to read the PBBS section of the TNC Reference Manual for more details. If you type the HELP command and press Enter, you will see the mailbox help file and then the standard mailbox prompt.

ENTER COMMAND: B,J,K,L,R,S, or Help >.

Now disconnect from the mailbox by first pressing F2. Now you will see the cmd: prompt. Next you type "d" and press Enter. You will now receive the message
